2021-22 UEFA Europa League | Tournament Details

The 2021-22 UEFA Europa League (UEL) is the 13th season of UEFA Europa League and 51th season of Europe's secondary club football tournament which is held in every year and organized by Union of European Football Association (UEFA).

The final of this tournament will be played at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in Seville, Spain on 18 May 2022. The qualifying round of the tournament will be played from 05 August 2021 to 26 August 2021 and the proper tournament will be played from 16 September 2021 to 18 May 2022. The winner of this tournament will automatically qualify for the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League group stage, and also earn the right to play against 2021-22 UEFA Champions League winner in the 2022 UEFA Super Cup.

Defending Champions-

Spanish side Villarreal are the defending champions, having won the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League season and qualified for the 2021 UEFA Super Cup. They will be unable to defend their title unless they finish third in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League group stage and are transferred to the 2021-22 UEFA Europa League preliminary knockut round.

Third Qualifying Round-

First leg matches was played on 05 August 2021 and second leg matches will played on 12 August 2021. The draw was held on 19 July 2021.

Champions Path-

Ten(10) loser sides of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round (champions path) will played in champions path of this round and 5 double-leg ties will held. 5 winner sides will advance to the Play-off Round and 5 loser sides will be transferred to the 2021-22 UEFA Europa Conference League play-off round (champions path).

Main Path-

Three(3) domestic cup winners from associations 14-16 of UEFA and 3 loser sides of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round (league path) will played in main path of this round and 3 double-leg ties will held. 3 winner sides will advance to the Play-off Round and 3 loser sides will be transferred to the 2021-22 UEFA Europa Conference League play-off round (main path).

Play-off Round-

First leg matches will played on 17-18 August 2021 and second leg matches will played on 24-25 August 2021. The draw was held on 02 August 2021. Six(6) domestic cup winners from associations 8-13 of UEFA, 5 winner sides of the third qualifying round (champions path), 3 winner sides of the third qualifying round (main path) and 6 loser sides of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round (champions path) will played in this round and 10 double-leg ties will held. 10 winner sides will advance to the Group Stage and 10 loser sides will be transferred to the 2021-22 UEFA Europa Conference League group stage.

Group Stage-

All matches will played between 16 September 2021 and 9 December 2021. The draw will be held on 27 August 2021. Seven(7) domestic cup winners from associations 1-7, One(1) league fourth placed team from associations 5, Four(4) league fifth placed teams from associations 1-4 of UEFA, 10 winner sides of play-off round, 4 loser sides from play-off round (champions path) of 2021-22 UEFA Champions League, 2 loser sides from play-off round (league path) of 2021-22 UEFA Champions League and 4 loser sides from third qualifying round (league path) of 2021-22 UEFA Champions League will played in group stage. Total 32 teams are divided in 8 group with 4 teams each. Each team will played other teams of the group in a double round-robin league format. 8 group winners will forward to Round of 16 of Knock-out Stage and 8 group runner-ups will forward to Preliminary Round of Knock-out Stage. 8 group third placed teams will transfered to 2021-22 UEFA Europa Conference League preliminary knockout round.

Tie-breaking Criteria-

Teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), and if tied on points, the following tiebreaking criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine the rankings.
1) Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
2) Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
3) Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
4) Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;
5) If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
6) Goal difference in all group matches;
7) Goals scored in all group matches;
8) Away goals scored in all group matches;
9) Wins in all group matches;
10) Away wins in all group matches;
11) Disciplinary points (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points);
12) UEFA club coefficient.
